Bush Quips He Might Stay in Power

October 17th, 2007 by gambit32

I want to hop on this one as fast as I can. I remember asking my teacher, Mrs Joan Byer, at Hall High in West Hartford CT, if there was ever, any kind of possible chance that a president could seize power during wartime, postpone or cancel elections, and hold onto power indefinitely if he saw fit.

I was basically told: you foolish idiot.

I’m closer to being right than ever in the past.

There is a “National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive” (aka NSPD-51) which has certain provisions that allow elections to be cancelled in the event of “catastrophic national emergencies”

Ironic… how that when this happens, it allows the president to take up dictatorial powers and over all governmental functions to make sure we emerge from the disaster with an “enduring constitutional government” (1).

and now we have him publicly joking about it.

This is not a laughing matter. This is dangerous thinking.
