Abusing video games to their fullest

February 25th, 2008 by gambit32

I try not to post just quick links like this, but its spectacular. One of the reasons I don’t play many games anymore is because theyve cut out the ability to fully interact with environment. GTA and Spider-Man 2 let you, and thats why theyre my some of my favorite games. Nothing really lets you abuse the innocent populous like Roller Coaster Tycoon

Good Ole Tom’s — Creepiest local commercials ever

February 24th, 2008 by gambit32

Normally I wouldn’t spill into worthless stuff like this, but I can’t help it.

As I’ve mentioned before, I dont have cable here. I do have a slingbox that I keep at my parents place. I don’t use it often, but its nice to find something to watch when I go to bed. Something mindless.

Well… Good Ole Tom has businesses in the greater Hartford area. Buys old coins, paper money, scrap metal, broken jewelry, and I think some other products as well. Okay, thats fine… but his commercials are damned right creepy

Uh. ok.

Good to know if I ever find a “juuuurrrry bawx” full of broken “juuuurrry”

Alright, this one was damned right creepy. I don’t care how terribly your business is doing, you can afford better actors than this. At least cut back on the makeup budget, Tom.Even looking beyond the need to pawn things off in an emergency, I find something rather irking about the terms “collecting all my ‘joory’ and scrap metal up from my friends and kin” I don’t know about you, but if some overweight cousin of mine showed up demanding any gold/silver/whatever I wasnt actively using, Id consider it closer to robbery than anything else.

What I cant find are the other two commercials, which specifically mention Tom wanting to give you “cash moneys” for your coins, jewelry, etc.

[[shakes head]]

The man is a local celebrity though, to the point OTHER folks have come by and gotten celebrity photos and video with him. I can’t fault someone for making a business that fills a need. He’s got a decent web presence too. I just think the commercials need a bit more work.

Good luck Tom!

I’ve found a food I will never, ever, ever try [Not PETA/Vegan friendly]

February 24th, 2008 by gambit32

I’ve mentioned in the past how I like to sample new foods, even if I think its going to make me unwell. Usually my argument is “I’ll try anything that is bred for human consumption.” So far the only thing I’ve ever said “NO” to is duck, since ducks are my favorite animals.

I’ve found one that most def makes me say “NO”

Cooked dog paws at a CXhinese restaurant. A French association of animal lovers on Monday launched a petition aimed at encouraging China to ban, by the Summer Olympics, the killing of dogs for food.

No way. Not a chance in hell. Never.

Image after the cut… Amy, don’t scan down, don’t click.

Keep the web open! Thothcii YOiNK!

February 24th, 2008 by gambit32

How weird is this. I was clearing out some old directories I hadnt accessed in years, and I ran into a PDF I took of a webpage back in like 1999.

For most people, its a who cares kind of moment. Why do I care? That guy happened to take a snapshot the exact instant I decided to send something to Netscape’s SignCam. They had what I believe to be an old SilentRadio type LED sign in their office. A webserver took the request and scrolled it on the sign, and also had a webcam hooked up (Probably a Logitich QuickCam at that time) to relay pictures back to the internet.

yoink.jpg

I sent my message, but I never got a snap. Oh well. I never thought of it again until a few years later when I googled for THOTHCII. A very special word, which not only is engraved on my class ring, but later also has been emblazoned upon a usenet group thanks to some forged Approved-By: headers back in 2001.

This guy happened across the signcam just as my message was going across, snapped it, and used it as commentary on his “Netscape — Noway!” website. I fired off an email, letting him know that by some weird chance of fates, he got the screenshot I missed back in 96. My response was later recalled on a mailing list or comment site of his, whatever.

Just a strange surreal moment.

I was clearing the directory out and figured I’d try my memory, and fired off an email to what I thought was his address. Site is long gone, and moved to another domain.

I guess my memory is still pretty good, and I got a reply (then again, if I can still remember people’s SSNs from their Marist ID badges, this shouldn’t surprise me.) He sent me a better quality image than the one I had save down, as I notice that the sign that Netscape has is probably from the same company as I got from the local linux cooperative project in Poughkeepsie that shut down.

I think I know what my first test message is going to be once I get it working again.

‘Perry Bible Fellowship’ Comic Is Ending

February 23rd, 2008 by gambit32

One of my favorite webcomics is ending this week

NEW YORK Nicholas Gurewitch’s “Perry Bible Fellowship,” the offbeat comic that ran online and in newspapers, will end next week.

“I’m making this decision for a variety of reasons, but mainly because I want to do other things besides be a cartoonist,” said Gurewitch.

A “Perry Bible Fellowship” hardcover book called “The Trial of Colonel Sweeto and Other Stories” was published last fall by Dark Horse Comics.

This was one of the best webcomics I’ve come across in years, and I’m sad to see it go. I still remember the first strip I came across. Its so rare to find something completely different from everything else. Its nice to find a comic that conveys so much with so few words.

February 23rd, 2008 by gambit32

RoadRunner handed down another speed boost overnight. Downstream got hardly anything, but my upstream doubled. Its about time.
I looked, and found my old results.

Locked out

February 21st, 2008 by gambit32

Well, that was rather unpleasant.

I just locked myself out of the house at 11pm watching the eclipse tonight. Force of habit made me throw the bolt behind me as I stepped out.

Let me just say again, its worth investing in something to SAFELY keep a housekey in if you ever get locked out. Otherwise I would’ve gotten to find a neighbor who was awake and then call Jeff to beg him to drive up and let me back in with the spare I gave him.

‘Mythbusters’ take ‘MacGyver’ challenge

February 20th, 2008 by gambit32

I was very happy when I first heard about this about 4 months ago. I love MacGyver, and I finally finished watching the entire series, plus TV movies, back in December.

At 9 tonight, cable television’s reigning science geeks, Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman of Discovery Channel’s “Mythbusters,” decide to put some of MacGyver’s more creative escapes to the test, in the show’s landmark 100th episode.

The episode was intially “meh” compared with the rest of the season, but I’m pretty happy with the last real test (locks, compass, film). The kite part was great which turned me around completely.
