RIP TommyVan - 03/26

March 28th, 2008 by gambit32

We lost my friend TommyVan on Wednesday. He passed in his sleep. Tommy was a regular in the Opie & Anthony Fan room. You could always count on him being there. I met him at the softball game last August, and he was one of the nicest guys Ive met in a long time. Its been years since I’ve met someone who was so happy to shake hands and meet people.

You’ll be missed Tommy

Quickie: Armadillo Collection

March 24th, 2008 by gambit32

For some reason, this came up on one of my forum sites. Apparently I have the largest collection of stuffed armadillo toys of the 114,328 registered members.

Also, bonus stained glass armadillo photo!

Apple, I don’t want your worthless browser. Go away

March 21st, 2008 by gambit32

Thank you C|net for picking this up

Apple has started offering Windows users its Safari 3.1 Web browser through the same online updater it utilizes for iTunes and the QuickTime video player.

I got a hit yesterday for this in my Apple Updater.  Its one thing to notify you of updates for existing software, its another to try and push down a fourth tier web browser to people who have no interest in it, and pass it off as an update to existing software.

Its called Updater for a reason, not “Install stuff you don’t want”-er

I found out what St Pat did with all of Ireland’s snakes

March 17th, 2008 by gambit32

290-340085-282655embeddedprod_affiliate58.jpgTexas Alcoholic Beverage Commission agents seized 411 bottles of illegal hooch Thursday at Bayou Bob’s Brazos River Rattlesnake Ranch in Palo Pinto County.

But it wasn’t your typical variety of moonshine: the bottles of vodka also contained 10-inch rattlesnakes.

There was no evidence that Popplewell was shipping the snake-infused alcohol from his business but the investigation is ongoing.

I’d buy a bottle of this in a second. Not to drink, but it would definitely be something cool to put on the shelf with the rest of my bar stuff.

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

Retailers plot to get your tax rebate check

March 17th, 2008 by gambit32

I know where mine is going: the gas tank.  Sorry, I’d love to splurge and buy something for myself, but I need to put it into my gas tank if I still want to be able to afford to get to work.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The government’s tax rebate stimulus is weeks away from your mailbox. But retailers worried about a consumer slowdown are already planning several ways for you to spend that windfall in their stores.

NTP Alert: Set your clocks ahead tonight

March 9th, 2008 by gambit32

I’m pretty surprised, because usually the big news websites like CNN and CBSNews will start hyping this starting at 8am, but I saw nothing other than third tier sites mentioning it today.  I’m starting early so there are no unexpected problems tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll miss something but heres the rundown so far.

  1. Stove
  2. Microwave
  3. Alarm Clock
  4. Shortwave Radio
  5. Honeywell Digital Thermometer #1
  6. Honeywell Digital Thermometer #2
  7. Honeywell Digital Thermometer #3 (well, thats convincing me not to upgrade the other 3)
  8. Watch - Casio Databank (atomic sync, but still needs a DST toggle)
  9. Watch - Casio Ironman (miss ya Chris!)
  10. Watch - Casio Pathfinder (ATC-1100)
  11. Watch - Citizen Blue Angels Navihawk
  12. Watch - Timex Expedition fob watch (pocket watch for you Yanks)
  13. Toyota Matrix
  14. Mini-velcro-clock (late edit)

Not included are things that SHOULD update automatically, like computers, cellphone, the XBOX, or things that sync off a time source in the house over NTP. Other things I’ll update when I use them next (Olympus digital camera, Sony digital camera, Sony camcorder, Sony psp, Nintendo DS) I also have some low-usage watches in a box that still have power, but I wont update them until I use them next. As it is, I went to change one of the thermostats and realized I never fixed it from last year. Ooops!

I’m a time nut. I built my own emergency-use enterprise level NTP liveCD distribution. I want to own a cesium clock so I dont need to bother with those blasted military owned ones. But I just know I’ve missed things.
