Some pharmacists are useless: Don’t Double Up on Diphenhydramine

March 3rd, 2008 by gambit32

I wasn’t able to get a hold of my doctor for 5 minutes of advice on the phone today

“Oh, you’d need to come in for anything like that. We don’t do that over the phone.”
“I live an hour away and I just told you I haven’t been able to sleep since Saturday. I don’t want to be driving a car in this condition.”
.. awkward pause ..
“Fine. Ill see if I can get a ride” ::CLICK::

I can’t get a ride. I know that. I wanted 5 minutes for an OTC recommendation.

pills.jpgI called the pharmacist instead, asked for advice on something OTC as a sleep aid. They know me there, its a small town. Nytol didnt work last night so I was looking for something different to try. I refuse to take the Ambien I have due to some rather awful side effects.

I know one guy who ended up out on his roof yelling into the night, and another whose family had to lock in a closet because they couldn’t wake him up to convince him it was a dream, and he kept trying to escape.

Yeah. I don’t feel like dealing with that since I don’t have anyone to pull me from the roof, throw me in a closet, and barricade it until I come to.

The pharmacist recommends Benadryl. “The Nytol and things like that are better are keeping you asleep and making it quality sleep, but the Benadryl will help get you there.” Ok, I can believe that. I’ve seen it knock someone on their ass in 20 minutes.

Check the packaging as I go to wash it down..

Its diphenhydramine. Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride. I had to dig in the trash to find my Nytol packaging to double-check.

25Mg in Benadryl, 25Mg in Nytol/Sominex. The Benadryl markets it as an antihistamine, the Nytol as a nighttime sleep aid.

So…

If you’re looking to save money and don’t want to buy name-brand prices for Sominex, go look in the allergy aisle and check the generics.

If you looking for a sleep aid and are also on allergy medicine, check the active ingredients.

Otherwise, hit me up on AIM and we can talk generics and hope it puts us BOTH to sleep before sunrise.

have you tried my all natural suggestion?
putting more nasty chemicals in your body can’t help

sorry, forgot to list some ideas
of course, no more caffeine!! very very bad
chamomile, lavender, valerian root, passion flower, california poppy, and my personal favorite: skullcap (it turns your brain off so you aren’t up thinking all night)

especially when Todd was away for a summer and I was totally alone a lot, I could NOT sleep.. I started taking a blend I found of this stuff and boom, asleep

  3. I hardly touch caffeine anymore. The doctor noticed my blood pressure is doing bad things, which explains why I’ve been sitting there for 8 hours each the last two nights listening to my heart pound. Ive had my dosage for that altered, so we’ll see if that helps
