O&A NYC trip: about as well as could be expected
NYC trip went off … alright. About as well as can be expected considering my luck. I’ve been meaning to go down for nearly 2 years and do the walkover between the CBS studios and XM studios for the Opie & Anthony Show. Its only a block, but then listeners are invited up to sit in on the bleachers and listen to the show. I planned on then hanging around and sitting in on Ron & Fez as well.
Douched by Producers
The show ends at 9am, myself and another guy wait for the crew to disembark from the building. We decide to follow Travis, Danny, and Jim to XM. Jim broke off, and I assumed running an errand since he was walking towards a UPS store and carrying a large envelope. We continue to follow Travis and Danny to XM. They go on up, we wait downstairs. Nothing seems amiss.
10 minutes later, Sam comes into view, we confirm with him
“Hey Sam, we wait here for Master Po if we want to come up to sit on the bleachers, right?”
“Yup! Sure!”
and he goes on by and on up.
20 minutes pass. Master Po arrives.
“Good Morning Gentlemen!”
He shakes hands.
“Theres no show today.”
Apparently they had a meeting with XM immediately after the CBS show, so they bailed on second half. Po said we could come back at 1 and he’ll come bring us up for Ron & Fez.
The Interim
Fine with me, I was planning on doing it anyway. But now I’ve got to figure how to kill 3 and a half hours in NYC. Between that 3.5 hours, and the amount of time I had before CBS ended, I checked the maps and I did something like 10 miles of wandering.
Part of my trip also entailed a guy rambling at me at a walk sign. From what I could put together, he saw my G32 hat, tried to convince me he was in cellblock G32 back in jail, and wanted money for a sandwich. I basically ended up mumbling and crossing against traffic to gtf away from him.
Next up was an elderly man in a pink tutu, pink bra, stuffed with tissues, dancing terribly in front of a small styro-foam cup at his feet with a single in it. 10 feet away was a newstand owner, complaining in something foreign to police and pointing at tutu-man, with the cop going “Theres absolutely nothing I can do about him”
Ron & Fez
Ron & Fez was great to sit in on. I love the show, but I can only cram in so much radio into my schedule. I timeshift 5 hours of O&A every weekday , but I need to limit my R&F to what I can catch live during work. Its an amazing, intellectual, and unique show. Just most local people I know who try it veer away before they can get the gist of the show.
I met up with the guy I ran into earlier for O&A, as well a few of folks from Paltalk and the message boards. Erock was a class act and provided me with a new O&A shirt and some WOW stickers when he found out how far I traveled for O&A, only to have them bail at the last minute for that meeting.
I’ll try this again soon, i just need to figure when they’re on vacation again and hope I have better luck.
Bonus material
On the train ride home, a lady asked if the seat next to me was available. As I cleared my stuff off it, she sat down, stuffed her face into her hands and proceeded to cry for the next hour. She only came up for air once, so I asked her if she was okay and wanted my unopened bottle of water. She declined and went back to sobbing.
Awkward.
