Say hello to Stubs

July 18th, 2008 by gambit32

A friend on one of my cat communities has a foster kitty theyre trying to adopt out.  Stubs has been posted on a number of sites, and is at Petsmart weekly for adoption day, but no one is biting.  It seems all the people who are setting up meetings to meet Stubs are bailing on their appointments.

If you’re in or near LA and want to adopt a Siamese mix, please do me a favor and check out Stubs.

I has an owl

May 2nd, 2008 by gambit32

I’m very happy right now. I confirmed I’ve got an owl somewhere either right on the property, or right outside of it. I think its in my field to the south-west of me. A nice deep resonant hoo-hoo-hoooooooo-hoo-hoo, which is a typical male great horned owl territorial call. I heard him a few weeks ago around 2330, and he started up tonight around 2305. I went outside to get a direction, and wherever he is, he is pos-def close.

Hoot.

feed fest

April 30th, 2008 by gambit32

Its a good evening!  Both the snakes have an interest in food.  Neither of them have taken any interest since September; and now that they’re back on feed it means I’ll be back to 100% rating on have pets that have a will to continue their own existence!

Patio pet door followup

December 9th, 2007 by gambit32

I just wanted to make a quick followup on a previous post.

I’ve actually taken down the patio pet door I made back in this post. It worked incredibly well, but due to some poor construction on my part, the pet flap itself didnt always go all the way back down, so it would hang open. I walked by once and it felt like there was a fan on the other side of the door, blasting cold air through.

Considering I’m desperately trying to save money on my heating bill, this wasn’t acceptable. The cat boxes are back inside for the winter. I’m not thrilled with this arrangement, but its better than having sub-freezing air getting sucked into the house when I’m trying my best to save on heating costs.

When the weather gets better, I’ll open this back up and see if I can get that flap to fold back down how it should. I think its due to some extra strain on the plastic because the hole cut in the wood wasn’t quite large enough.

edit (12/11/2007): I’ve already noticed significantly less heat loss since I took this out.  yay.

Snake migration in progress

November 28th, 2007 by gambit32

My snakes will soon be migrating “down.” I have the thermostats set really low in the house this year, and I think it will be too cold for them. With the furnace downstairs, the basement has always come out relatively warm compared to upstairs, so for their health I think I’ll put them downstairs.

Everyone still will have heatpads and lamps, but an ambient room temperature will definitely help. I need to stop someplace soon though and get timers for the lamps so I don’t accidentally leave them on overnight.

edit (Thursday): “needed” items removed, because I got them.  Hydrox went downstairs around 10 last night.  Strangles will probably go downstairs sometime today.

Okay, this is great.  If this is real, and you’re that stupid, you deserve to get rabies.

HOWTO: Build a patio pet door from basically scratch

October 16th, 2007 by gambit32

(im so sorry! imagebolt shut my images down! Ill get them all back soon. Until then, here is my gallery)

I decided this winter I didn’t want to have litter boxes in the living spaces again. During warmer months, the cats boxes are located in the enclosed porch. During the winter though, I can’t exactly leave patio door open. The room isn’t worth heating as its barely insulated.

They make patio pet doors, but with prices going up to $230 or higher, not to mention shipping costs of $40 and up (most units have large sections of glass), I decided I could do better on my own.
