Doctor Who and the fate of Susan Foreman

June 13th, 2008 by gambit32

Just a quick note here. One of the questions about The Time War from this latest incarnation of Doctor Who has been the fate of other Time Lords known to exist. The BBC Doctor Who FAQ which was just updated this week states

The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords. We’ve no details of any other survivors, including Susan, The Rani, Romana or Chancellor Flavia. Please don’t email us about this.

However, we do indeed know (in part.) In The Empty Child, Doctor Constantine remarks

“Before this all began, I was a father and a grandfather; and now I am neither”

The Doctor’s response?

“I know the feeling.”

Susan Foreman was the Doctor’s grandaughter. I can only guess she is assumed dead in the Time War as well. I personally think of it as a hunt through time to destroy the remaining Time Lords, like Vader’s quest to kill all the Jedi in Star Wars.

How else would those like the Master, The Rani, Susan, etc be potentially presumed dead. They werent soldiers, they were rogues. For them to be potentially killed in various time streams, they would need to be hunted down.

We’ve seen The Doctor wrong in the past, with the Master’s return after the prediction from The Face of Boe. Who knows. I’ve got my own predictions (which other also seem to have picked up on) on some of the arc words for this season. I’d like to see some of them answered this season, but I’m hoping they’ll drag this out for many many more.

What the hell sling?! SlingCatcher delayed yet again

April 9th, 2008 by gambit32

Sling Media is doing a lot these days to anger me.  First Slingplayer 2.0 was pushed back, and now the Slingcatcher is offset.  Theyve been showing this off for over a year now.  This is getting old

SlingCatcher delayed–again | Tech news blog - CNET News.com
The makers of the popular Slingbox have been promising the SlingCatcher for almost a year and half now. And once again, the projected release date will come and go quietly.

Come on guys, this is all I’ve wanted since it was announced.  Right now I’m watching my sling stuff from CT piped to a dying laptop, running various programs to either hibernate the system or kill the processes and turn off the monitor.  I dont CARE about streaming media from a local machine on the network.  I want to capture a stream from a remote source, put it on my television, and thats it.  The fact you’re giving me a remote with the package is 10x more than I expected.

Watching television on a laptop screen blows.  Come on sling.. help me out

Apple, I don’t want your worthless browser. Go away

March 21st, 2008 by gambit32

Thank you C|net for picking this up

Apple has started offering Windows users its Safari 3.1 Web browser through the same online updater it utilizes for iTunes and the QuickTime video player.

I got a hit yesterday for this in my Apple Updater.  Its one thing to notify you of updates for existing software, its another to try and push down a fourth tier web browser to people who have no interest in it, and pass it off as an update to existing software.

Its called Updater for a reason, not “Install stuff you don’t want”-er

The WAHHs have it — WAHH! error in Wordpress

March 8th, 2008 by gambit32

As you’ve probably noticed, all my posts now have a WAHH! at the beginning of them. I pushed out a new version of Adsense Manager (v3.0.14 to be precise), and I guess the author accidently left a little error note of his own inside. Soooo, all my posts now have WAHH to start them off.

I could go in, disable the plug-in, the load and re-save all my posts, but I’m just going to wait for the next version and hope that cleans up the old problems.

edit: All fixed! The new version works. After installing, the WAHH!s were still there, but once I posted a new entry it cleaned the rest up.  This is probably because I also run wp-cache. Thanks for the help and the great plugin, Martin !

Google steps up to Outlook: Calendar syncing now with us

March 6th, 2008 by gambit32

I’ve been waiting for something like this from Google themselves for a while. Maybe its time to switch back to the PDA phone.

Online calendars are great but the problem is you tend to have one at work and a separate personal one. Now you can see events in both calendars at once, at least if you are using Google Calendar and Microsoft Outlook. Google released Google Calendar Sync on Wednesday, which allows you to sync up those two calendars.

[from c|net]

edit: Quick review.  I’m very happy with this, but like they warn, it only allows you to sync your primary calendar.  I keep numerous calendars on GCal, and I hope to someday be able to sync them all.

Keep the web open! Thothcii YOiNK!

February 24th, 2008 by gambit32

How weird is this. I was clearing out some old directories I hadnt accessed in years, and I ran into a PDF I took of a webpage back in like 1999.

For most people, its a who cares kind of moment. Why do I care? That guy happened to take a snapshot the exact instant I decided to send something to Netscape’s SignCam. They had what I believe to be an old SilentRadio type LED sign in their office. A webserver took the request and scrolled it on the sign, and also had a webcam hooked up (Probably a Logitich QuickCam at that time) to relay pictures back to the internet.

yoink.jpg

I sent my message, but I never got a snap. Oh well. I never thought of it again until a few years later when I googled for THOTHCII. A very special word, which not only is engraved on my class ring, but later also has been emblazoned upon a usenet group thanks to some forged Approved-By: headers back in 2001.

This guy happened across the signcam just as my message was going across, snapped it, and used it as commentary on his “Netscape — Noway!” website. I fired off an email, letting him know that by some weird chance of fates, he got the screenshot I missed back in 96. My response was later recalled on a mailing list or comment site of his, whatever.

Just a strange surreal moment.

I was clearing the directory out and figured I’d try my memory, and fired off an email to what I thought was his address. Site is long gone, and moved to another domain.

I guess my memory is still pretty good, and I got a reply (then again, if I can still remember people’s SSNs from their Marist ID badges, this shouldn’t surprise me.) He sent me a better quality image than the one I had save down, as I notice that the sign that Netscape has is probably from the same company as I got from the local linux cooperative project in Poughkeepsie that shut down.

I think I know what my first test message is going to be once I get it working again.
